Standing between two historic landmarks – the Romanesque Château Comtal and the Gothic Basilica of Saint-Nazaire – the Hôtel de la Cité is set in its own glorious gardens and is the only property actually situated within Carcassonne’s medieval walls. With its wood panelling, stained-glass windows and artfully draped tapestries, the interior of the building offers an unimpeachable aura of luxury. The lobby is accessed via a long, Gothic-style gallery/corridor. Varying in size and layout due to the age of the building, the 40 guestrooms are individually furnished and decorated with more than a dash of aristocratic style. The standard rooms have a queen- or king-sized bed, desk and two comfortable armchairs. Some overlook an inner courtyard and others provide a view of Carcassonne. Traditional style is of course matched by modern comfort, and all rooms feature the most up-to-date facilities, including air conditioning, sound-proofing, direct-dial telephone and television. The bathrooms are either tiled or clad in marble, with a bath or a shower. The hotel offers a variety of dining options. “La Barbacane Restaurant” boasts a menu combining the freshest local ingredients with innovative recipes and is decorated in a neo-Gothic style with magnificent fireplaces, high ceilings and cathedral chairs. The relaxed atmosphere at “Chez Saskia Brasserie” makes it a great favourite with guests, who can start the day there with a splendid buffet breakfast. Guests can also enjoy dining al fresco or in the half-shade under the trees at the hotel's summer restaurant, “Le Jardin de l'Evêque”. And last but not least, the “Library Bar” offers the chance to enjoy a comfortable, soothing drink and exquisite canapés, accompanied by live piano entertainment.
